Pain management is a very important aspect of veterinary care. Your pet cannot speak and wants nothing more than to appease you, which means they do not always let us know that they are experiencing pain or discomfort. However, we know that pets experience pain, even though they may not express it the same as we do. Pets that receive pain medication recover from surgery more quickly, and have fewer complications. When pain medicine is given to pets that experience pain from chronic conditions such as arthritis, they will interact more, act younger, eat better, and seem happier. Pain management is used for surgery, injuries, and chronic painful conditions.
At Scottsdale Hills Animal Hospital, we use multi-modal pain management. This means we use combinations of medications to best limit and control pain. For example, during a mass removal we use a local numbing agent, such as lidocaine, along with anti-inflammatories. Some conditions also benefit from the addition of a different class of medication. Together this combination not only controls pain, but also prevents it. After most surgeries, we also send you home with at least 3 days of pain medication. Every pet is an individual, and your pet may need a different pain management plan, so please contact us if your pet is showing signs of pain.
